World Blood Donor
Day 2023 will be observed on June 14, 2023.
It is
international day organized by the World Health Organization to raise awareness
about the importance of voluntary blood donation and to promote the need for
safe blood and blood products.
People with
chronic diseases or complications can benefit from donated blood in terms of
treatment and support.
As we commemorate World Blood
Donor Day and express gratitude towards the selfless blood donors who have
saved countless lives, it is imperative that we also acknowledge the crucial
aspect of blood safety. Though blood transfusions are lifesaving and promote
wellness, many patients don't get timely access to safe blood. It's essential
that a country's healthcare policy and infrastructure incorporates the
provision of safe and sufficient blood in order to curb this issue.
Insufficiently
tested blood and an unsafe transfusion process can result in
transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs) such as HIV, Hepatitis B, and C,
among others, which could endanger the patient's life. To guarantee the safety
of blood donations, thorough screening is the best approach. The World Health
Organization (WHO) suggests that all donations be screened for infections
before being used, with mandatory testing for HIV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C,
and syphilis. Understanding the blood types of donors is also crucial, as
transfusions are most secure when the blood type and Rh status of the
transfused blood match those of the recipient (i.e., when the blood types are
compatible).
InTec, an industry
leader in the in-vitro diagnostics market, specializes in infectious disease
diagnostics with a focus on point-of-care screening. Its comprehensive solution
enables the screening of donated blood, including products for HIV (CE &
WHO pre-qualified) testing, HCV (CE & WHO pre-qualified) testing, Hepatitis
B testing, and Syphilis (TP) testing, to reduce the risk of
transfusion-transmissible infections in blood recipients. In addition, InTec
has recently introduced a new and improved ABO and RhD blood grouping test kit,
which greatly simplifies the process of blood typing screening.
